Side view of a Fourdrinier paper machine

Fourdrinier paper machines similar to the ones used in the Parsons Paper Mill #2
These machines ran the length of the entire wing of the mill building. The wet pulp mixture is feed onto a screen at the wet end of the machine and then is squeezed through a series of rollers and then dried and polished at the dry end of the machine.

Different combinations of materials in the pulp produced differing qualities in the final papers. Cotton rags, organic cotton, hemp and plancette were added to provide longevity, stability, strength, and variety.

Medallions were welded into the wire screens so the fibers would be thinner where the metal protruded up from the screen, producing a watermark, and uniquely identifying paper.
